Sailing Along the Life of Single Parenthood

So Close Now

I have found that I can’t do much with the blog design during the week – it requires too much focus from me, and I can’t do that anytime except Sundays it seems.  So I just spent the last couple hours tweaking some other little things and working on my sidebars.

I wasn’t happy with the six buttons just because I had a few more sites I wanted to share with you in such a good spot.  I was able to add the third row, and now you’ll see nine of my favorite sites over on the right side.

I also updated the ad that you’ll see about half way down this page (between posts two and three) for a cause that is very close to my heart that I would like all my readers to support.  It’s an organization that supports our troops. My grandfather and uncle served in the Navy. My dad served in the Army, and my brother is currently in Iraq serving in the Army so I’ve joined up with Soldiers’ Angels so that I can do more than say I support our troops, I’m actually showing my support for a couple soldiers.

And finally I cleaned up the sidebars.  I had deleted the stuff that I knew I didn’t want, but it was really unorganized.  Tonight I deleted everything and started over.  I’ve still got a couple small things I want to add, but I think it looks much cleaner and organized now.

I hope to finish up all the technical stuff next Sunday and then do a little with the colors, graphics, etc.  Maybe make it a little prettier.   Also got a few bugs to work out an a friend’s blog that I’m helping her with (Anna’s Life).

New WordPress Theme Directory

I’ve been playing with learning to build WordPress themes so the news that after an extended time WordPress has opened a new theme directory that will have added themes is pretty exciting. I’ve got some basic designs ready, but I’m trying to learn more about the language before I delve further into my graphics. If you are looking for a new theme for your blog and you use WordPress check out the new directory as it should continue to have more and more themes available.

A New Home for My Thoughts

I’m really excited to announce my new domain. I hope that those of you that have followed my other blog (ChattyWomen) will follow me here. I have to admit to being a techno-geek and being really interested in the adminstrative and background stuff behind our blog so in order to find out how all that works, I made a decision last week that since I already owned web hosting space, that I would buy an additional domain and play with the background/administrative stuff.

The hardest part for me was coming up with a domain name to register. What did I use? I wanted something easy for friends and family to use, and I wanted something that would be applicable to my life for the longterm (not something I would outgrow and thus let fall to the side). Then when I came up with this name, I just knew it would be taken. It was so simple, and my name is so common…what were the chances? I felt doomed as I typed it in and almost fell out when it showed up as an option. I locked it in fast before someone else thought of it. :)

The next step was installing wordpress and that was super easy. (Thank you wordpress for an installation that I completed in 30 minutes.) After installation though came another difficult part for me – picking out a theme. What did I want my blog to look like? I looked and no telling how many and installed 7 different themes before I settled on this one. Then it still wasn’t quite what I wanted so I went out looking for help in a redesign. I think though that I am now happy with the look. Finally came the data (both the posts and the two outer columns). I imported several of my old posts so I could see what this would look like with ‘real data.’ I’ve played with the plugins and such, and I think I now have a blog I’m content with. (Still a few things I want to tweak, but the overall look I think I’ve settled on)

What do you think of my selections? Do you see anything that looks out of place? Anything missing? I would love to have your advice.
