Making Technology Upgrades

To top off being so busy lately, my online time is limited at school on my conference period because they are upgrading our network to some more reliable products as our used cisco stuff is really outdated right now. It’s weird how far behind schools are sometimes, but the good news is that once everything is replaced, we’ll have better and more reliable connections.

Adding Certifications

I have a bachelor’s degree in business, and I have thought about going back for my master’s, but just lack the initiative. I know I should, but I seem to make excuse after excuse to postpone it each year. So instead of doing that, I have been looking into just adding some certifications to my resume. I looked into the Microsoft certifications as I actually used to train students in our high school for this, but I also want something more “prestigious” and more technical – Cisco certification. This is a pretty intensive certification, but I think I would really like to have this one on my resume if I ever get the chance to teach business and technology classes instead of the English classes I currently teach. In addition, this could open up some great opportunities for me for after school hours, weekends, and/or summer for making extra money for our family. Having this certification allows for many more technological career opportunities than if I just tried to use my knowledge and experience. It’s amazing sometimes what a simple piece of paper can do for you.

The Cisco Learning Network looks like an interesting and helpful place to work on this certification. It gives you the details of how to get certified and also shows you the job opportunities available out there after you do, in fact, get certified.  I have actually worked with Cisco routers, switches, and wireless systems  at my last school where I served as Technology Assistant as well as classroom teacher so I am thinking of looking seriously into those categories for my first certifications.

I’m Loving It

Da, da, da, da, daam…I’m lovin’ it!  Do you know that McDonald’s theme song?  Yep.  That’s the life I’m living.  You see a couple weeks ago, I bought a new laptop (that I think I finally got set up completely this week).  I bought a HP Pavilliondv6000 and I’m loving it. I had wanted a laptop for a while and kept putting it off and justifiying not buying it, but I’m excited to say I broke down and did it, and I’m so glad I did.  So far, I would highly recommend this laptop.

But it gets even better. I also bought a Linksys router that provides me with wireless Internet at home.  Now I can move around and not be tied to a desk (a desk that I have since sent to the dump).  And I was even able to sit out side and watch Cameron swim while surfing the net.  How cool is that?  Yea!!

The First Step to Blogging

With the fun I’m having blogging and the little bit of money I’ve made, I’ve had a few friends ask me for advice in starting blogs of their own. While their are plenty of websites where you can host your blog for free, I actually recommend that if at all possible each of them go ahead and buy their own domain name. It makes your blog more personal, and if you do want to try to earn profits off of your blog, you’ll find that you can make much more money with your own domain than you can on the big blogging conglomerates.

If you decided to take this plunge, you must decide who to host your website with. This will involve purchasing your domain and storage space for your site. It is very important to make a wise decision when choosing your host. I have learned this the hard way. While I’m happy with my provider for this site, I have run into difficulties with another site that I chose to buy domain sites from because my sites are down at least once every day (that i catch). So I am looking and doing a little research so that when my year expires, I can possibly move that domain.

Network Solutions is one possible host I can honestly say I will now consider for web site hosting.  Network Solutions was a recent winner of the FindMyHost Editors Choice award.  This in itself shows them to be worthy of consideration. I’ve reviewed their prices, and they are very competitive with other hosts that have positive feedback (charging less than $10 a month for your storage space and registering your domain for free). In addition, if you want to expand into a larger site or have mroe traffic and need additional storage space, they have different options.

Other benefits of Network Solutions? I’m impressed by the fact that they offer 24/7 Customer Service. Even with my current provider of this site who I’ve had pretty good luck with, I’ve not had that option.  In addition, I host a few other websites within my storage space and Network Solutions is capable of hosting those sites as they do in fact support PHP and MySQL. They also advertise 99.9% uptime which is very important when considering a web host (that is my current problem with some of my other sites).
