Sailing Along the Life of Single Parenthood

Looking for a Last Minute Stocking Stuffer?

I was recently given the chance by Team Mom and Parents Magazine to review a gerat little toy that would make a great stocking stuffer.  It is the Look At Me Camera.  According to the press release from Parents Magazine:

If there’s one thing toddlers love, it’s imitating grownups – pretending is how little ones make sense of the world around them. The ultimate in imaginary play, this sleek, “just-like-mom’s” camera takes a whole new approach to hamming it up: a realistic shutter sound offers endless fun for a pint-sized photographer while a big fish-eye mirrored lens on the front of the camera engages friends lucky enough to be the subject.

This camera said it was safe for 12 months and older so I immediately knew the little girl I wanted to share this with so I called and made a play date for her and my daughter.  The little girl I shared this with is 18 months old, and she LOVED this camera.  It was a huge success.  She carried it around the house and took everyone’s picture at least a million times.  I think the mirror on the front is supposed to be a big deal for little kids, but what she really liked were the sound and light effects. When your child takes a picture, it makes a realistic clicking noise and there’s a flash, and there is also a second button that has a voice that says phrases such as, “Looking good.”

These cameras are available at Target for the suggested retail price of $15. If you are looking for a couple more small gifts for your little one, then head to Target and see if you can still get your hands on the Look-At-Me Camera.

Delgo: In Theaters December 12

Have you heard of this movie?  I had not until I got a message from Team Mom. Trusting the instincts of this wonderful organization, I went straight over to the Delgo website to watch the preview and get more information. I have to admit that this first movie from Fathom Studios has my attention. In fact, I’ve already gone to see which theater in my area will in fact be showing Delgo.

Not heard of this movie either? Let me start by giving you just a few of the voices you’ll hear if you watch this movie:

  • Freddie Prinze Jr
  • Val Kilmer
  • Michael Clarke Duncan
  • Jennifer Love Hewitt
  • Anne Bancroft (in her last performance)
  • Chris Kattan
  • Lou Gossett Jr.
  • Kelly Ripa
  • Burt Reynolds
  • Sally Kellerman
While you may not recognize all of these movies, I think all movie fans will find at least a few of their favorite actors in this all star cast lineup.
So what is Delgo about?  According to the press release,

The story takes place in the magical land of Jhamora which is divided between two cultures – the Nohrin, winged masters of the skies, and the Lockni, the terrestrial tribe who harness the mystical powers of the land.  When Delgo (Freddie Prinze, Jr.), a reckless Lockni teenager, forms a forbidden friendship with the spunky Nohrin Princess Kyla (Jennifer Love Hewitt), hostilities between the two peoples escalate, setting the stage for an exiled empress (Anne Bancroft) to exact her revenge and reclaim her rule.

Falsely imprisoned, Delgo and his best friend, Filo (Chris Kattan), must put aside their differences to join forces with a sworn enemy, Bogardus (Val Kilmer), and travel to the mysterious land of Perran to rescue Princess Kyla.  Here they encounter fanciful creatures and discover more than just a kidnapped princess, they learn the value of different cultures and the importance of working together.

And of course every parent needs to know the fine print: Delgo is rated PG and has a running time of 90 minutes.

The Secret Mountain Books

Our latest Team Mom product to evaluate was a super hit in this house – Secret Mountain Books. I had never heard of these before but was immediately impressed with the illustrations.  I was in love from the beginning.  Thanks to Team Mom we received:

  • Dream Songs Night Songs
  • A Duck in New York City  from Belgium to Brazil
  • Down at the Sea Hotel

These books were sitting on the dining room table waiting my further evaulation when Cameron found them and I no longer was allowed to touch them.  She immediately claimed these books as her own and went and curled up in her room and started reading them. It wasn’t long before she came back and wanted to know about the CD in the back of the book.  We opened them up and she fell in love with the songs on each CD.

I was so impressed with these books that last week during National Teen Readers Week, I sent some of my teenage students to the elementary school to read these books and share the CDs with some of the young students.  They all came back talking about how much the kids enjoyed them.  In fact, I have decided to donate them to our elementary library since they were loved so much.

Fun in the Tub

We had the great opportunity this past week to try out some fun new water toys thanks to Team Mom, Kid Kleen, Aquadoodle, and Spin Master.  The one that proved to be the most enjoyable for Cameron (and Mom)  was the Kid Kleen Bath Blizzard.  This was a blast.  What is the Bath Blizzard? It is a bubble machine for your bath tub.  It sticks to the side of your tub and with little effort, you end up with a bath tub FULL of bubbles!  The first thiing I noticed on the review sheet that I was given was that these water toys are meant for preschoolers. At 8, I was worried that Cameron might be too old for this product, but boy was I surprised when my shower taking “big girl” decided she just might need a bubble bath EVERY DAY.  I have to admit that I even took a try when I had the morning to myself Sunday morning and yep…relaxing in a bubble bath has never been this easy.

The second water toy we received was an Aquadoodle Draw ‘N Doodle mat – also seemed to be focused more at younger preschool age children, but when Cameron saw it she proclaimed how she had seen this on TV and I could tell she was dying to check it out.  So we immediately broke into the box and she started drawing.  I wasn’t impressed so we then started using it to practice her multiplication facts and soon a task that usually brings tears to both our eyes was fun.

Overall we both had a great time playing with both of these water toys from SpinMaster and Team Mom.
