The Secret Mountain Books

Our latest Team Mom product to evaluate was a super hit in this house – Secret Mountain Books. I had never heard of these before but was immediately impressed with the illustrations.  I was in love from the beginning.  Thanks to Team Mom we received:

  • Dream Songs Night Songs
  • A Duck in New York City  from Belgium to Brazil
  • Down at the Sea Hotel

These books were sitting on the dining room table waiting my further evaulation when Cameron found them and I no longer was allowed to touch them.  She immediately claimed these books as her own and went and curled up in her room and started reading them. It wasn’t long before she came back and wanted to know about the CD in the back of the book.  We opened them up and she fell in love with the songs on each CD.

I was so impressed with these books that last week during National Teen Readers Week, I sent some of my teenage students to the elementary school to read these books and share the CDs with some of the young students.  They all came back talking about how much the kids enjoyed them.  In fact, I have decided to donate them to our elementary library since they were loved so much.

Another Girl Club

Today thanks to a link at MomDot, I’ve found another great series for girls that involves books, a club, and goodies – The CupCakes Club.  We haven’t read a book yet, but Cameron is exploring the website right now and totally involved in it.  I’m going to try to get her a book as soon as possible so we can see if this is something she’d continue to read.  I’ve also entered a contest to win a CupCakes Girls necklace over at MomDot and wanted to share not only this club, but the contest with you.

Mom Review: A Little Bit of Faith

As promised, I want to provide you with my review for you the book, “A Little Bit of Faith,” from this mom’s perspective.  As mentioned previously, I thought it was a great book, and we’ll be purchasing future books in the series for sure.

One of the first things I really liked about it is that it is a chapter book so it will in fact push my 8 year old daughter as it’s not something she will sit down and read in one sitting. So she’ll have to retain the story until our next reading session to be able to follow the story.

Another thing I liked is that while it is on her reading level (and in fact I was surprised that she knew some of the words as she was reading it to me), it does push and occasionally throw in words that are not common to her so we get to chat about them and I can see if she can tell meaning by context clues (which thanks to the great writing of Cindy Kenney) she was. Some of the words that threw her right off the bat were the names of some of the states.  She had not heard of Kansas or Nebraska so she didn’t quite get them right. (Later after reading that night, we discussed that Mommy actually lived in Kansas for a little while when she was little). Another word? Sternly. She pronounced it fine, but something about the way she said it, I knew she didn’t know what it meant.

Third – the inclusion of God and guardian angels in the storyline.  I loved that not only was it mentioned as part of everyday use but also that it was used on such a great age appropriate level – that we are all special in our own ways. When I first realized that there would be some mention of God in this book, I admit to being worried.  I didn’t really want this to turn into the focus of the book as I knew that would probably not keep my daughter’s attention for long.  I was so relieved to see how it was just used here and there and in very appropriate, non-religion specific ways.

Fourth – short chapters.  With a young daughter who wants to love to read but is still trying to decide if she actually is, I was thankful for the shorter chapters.  We frequently define our reading by chapters. I stop her at each chapter to quiz her about her understanding. Sometimes we take turn reading chapters so that she doesn’t get too worked up in the reading and missing parts of the story.  And with chapters that are only 7 pages of actual writing, that was a very reasonable task.

And finally, the pictures.  While personally I wouldn’t want to read a book with this many pictures, I suspected Cameron would like them, and I was right. I immediately noticed that when we flipped a page, when there was a picture (which is very frequently) she would pause to look at it and take it in. For a reader who is just moving into chapter books, this is a great resource as it helps them with their comprehension and it keeps their interest. The artwork in this book is amazing too (see the few pictures I posted).

I really do think this is one of the best children’s books I’ve seen come out in a long time. I am hoping that enough are released soon that we can in fact read several of them before Cameron moves up in her reading level to the point that these are not interesting anymore.

Finding Books for Your Children

It is very important to me to raise a child who not only can tolerate but enjoys reading as a hobby.  We are struggling with that right now though.  My daughter loves the IDEA of reading, but not so much the act.  She loves to buy books, she loves to check them out from the library, but then they seem to sit for long periods of time without being read unless I insist encourage her.  I’m always on the lookout for a new book that will catch her interest.  Being a fan of series, I’ve noticed that I also tend to encourage her to read series.

I’ve noticed that some of my favorite blogs to read frequently are reviewing products (that were given to them for free) and host giveaways regularly.  So I’ve been picking the women’s brains for ideas to get me started in this area, and lo and behold it has finally paid off!  I was sent a copy of the first in a new series of books designed for young girls!! The book is called “A Little Bit of Faith” by Cindy Kenney and is book one in the series called “Precious Girls Club.” This book was just released to the public on September 2nd (yesterday), and I received it in the mail yesterday too!

I try to preview books before Cameron begins reading them so I sat down last night and read this book. I’ll be posting a detailed review tomorrow followed by a review of Cameron’s opinion, but I will go ahead and tell you that this book receives a two thumbs up from me.

Come back tomorrow for my full review of the book and general storyline as well as some other great features of the Precious Girls Club.

Audible.Com (Or other Audio Books)

Going through the paperwork that came with my Sandisk MP3 player, and it comes with an offer for a free month membership at audible.com which would permit me to download one free audio book.  I’m trying to decide if I should. I hate trial memberships because then I have to remember to call and cancel so I only sign up if I think I will keep it.  I’ve never listed to adult books though so I’m wondering, would I enjoy it? Would I benefit from this membership?  So I decided to come ask you guys, my readers…Do you listen to books?  Have you tried any memberships like Audible.com?
