Inkheart

Have you read this book? I’ve read it myself several times as I’ve read it with groups of students. I’m so excited to know that a movie is now coming out about this book. This is as exciting to me as many were about the Twilight movie.  And I’m even more excited to learn that Brenden Fraser will be the star of Inkheart.  I have loved his performance for many years. I love each of the Mummy movies, but I think I first became a Fraser fan in 1993 when he played in Son In Law. We actually have that movie on DVD and I stil pull it out and watch it from time to time. Cameron loves to watch him as George of the Jungle. :)

If you do not know anything about the story of Inkheart, it is the first book in the Inkworld trilogy. The story is about a 12 year old girl, Meggie, who flees her home with her father and a family friend. Her father ends up being kidnapped.  Through searching for him, Meggie learns that her father actually read her mother INTO the book Inkheart and that is why she has never been a part of Meggie’s life. I don’t want to ruin the entire plot, but I will conclude by saying that Meggie’s father atempts to read the people who are pursuing them into a book, and this book is the story of that attempt.

This movie will be in theaters January 23rd. Watch the trailer below for a sneak preview.

Family Movie Night

Our family loves movies. We watch at least one movie every week at home together as a family AND go out to the movies twice a month.  While the movies always have to be suitable for Cameron (who is 8), we take turns on who picks the movies each time.  Frequently we do these movie nights on the weekends so that the girls can invite friends over.  If we eat at home, whichever girls picks the movie, the other gets to pick the food.  Some nights we do something simple like pizza. Other nights they choose steak and potatoes or lasagna.  If we go out to the movies, popcorn and a coke are a must.  Cameron gets the child’s popcorn meal and Becka and I share a large popcorn and coke. (You get free refills on larges so we can dump refills into Cameron’s little children’s meal box as she finishes her meal.)

After watching this trailer, I’m thinking that All Roads Lead Home The Movie will be one of the movies I push the girls to watch:

This is the perfect movie for a family to watch – a movie that’s child appropriate and communicates a good message.  I had never heard of this movie until given the chance to review it for you, but now that I’ve watched this trailer and done a little research, I think it will be on our must see list.

The Librarian: Curse of the Judas Chalice

I’ve never heard of this series, but TNT is not a channel I regularly watch. After being given the opportunity to watch, “The Librarian: Curse of the Judas Chalice” though, I will be keeping my eye out for others in this series.  I’m trying now to get my hands on the past editions that I have never seen because this was a great show that my entire family all enjoyed watching.  Becka (my 17 year old) is also wanting to watch the previous shows in this series.

In case you’ve never heard of these movie series on TNT either, let me give you a little background. Noah Wyle stars as  ”Flynn, the librarian.” But he’s not a librarian who sits in a library and shelves books. Instead he protects amazing artifacts. The previous two movies in the series were The Librarian: Quest for the Spear (released in 2004) and The Librarian: Return to King Solomon’s Mines (released in 2006). I guess fitingly the next one was released 2 years later – 2008.  I’m kind of disappointed if we only get one of these movies every two years – yes that’s how much I enjoyed it.

From TNT:

The story opens with the kidnapping of Professor Lazlo (Davison), a brilliant language and history expert at the University of Bucharest.  Elderly and using a crutch to walk, he is taken hostage by a group that wants to force him to locate the Judas Chalice.  They hope to use the cup – which was made from the 30 pieces of silver Judas received for betraying Jesus – to bring the notorious Prince Vlad Dracul back to life and foist evil on the world.

Meanwhile, Flynn heads to New Orleans for what he hopes will be a vacation.  He has been summoned through mysterious dreams by Simone Renoir (Katic), a gorgeous New Orleans jazz club singer.  She has made it her mission to keep the location of the Judas Chalice a secret so it won’t fall into the wrong hands.  When the secret is accidentally revealed and the cup taken, Flynn and Simone must do everything in their power to prevent Vlad Dracul from casting the entire world into shadow.  Helping from the sidelines are Judson (Newhart), the enigmatic and always surprising head of the Library, and Charlene (Curtin), the extremely serious-minded, no-nonsense personnel director.

This was a great cast, and while I’ll admit to not usually being really into “vampire movies,” this one pulled me in and kept me paying close attention the entire two hours. In fact, I didn’t even want to stop for bathroom breaks or to pop more popcorn. :) Luckily we watched in on DVD so I was able to pause it and not miss anything.

The Cast:

  • Noah Wyle as Flynn Carsen
  • Bob Newhart as Judson
  • Stana Katic as Simone
  • Jane Curtin as Charlene
  • Bruce Davison as Professor Lazlo

Can’t wait to see this movie? (I’ll be watching it again I’m sure). TNT will be airing the latest Librarian move on  Sunday, Dec. 7, at 8 p.m. (ET/PT). It will also replay at 10 pm and 2 am.

But it gets even better. if you are like me and are only learning about this series then be sure to tune in early as both of the previous movies will also air on December 7th starting 4 hours before the movie (at 4 p.m. (ET/PT).

History in the Making

Bill_shatner

Just a few weeks ago, we saw a major historical event – the election of President elect Obama. As we continue to watch the news, we see him preparing for the office he will assume in January – naming cabinet members, touring the White House and even allowing his children to receive a tour from the current “First Children.”

Of course the news will not be the only place we see mention of this shift in American politics – there have been many comic strips (some that caused big uproar and made the news), and now we will see a satirical movie about America’s final change – a movie called “Changes are Coming.”

Below you will find a preview of this movie on youtube:

Embedded Video

As you can see this movie has a very interesting outlook on the changes coming to America. Keep in mind that it is meant to be satirical. Head over to YouTube and watch it and leave your comments. They are wanting to know we think.

Personally I have to say that this is a movie I would probably watch once. Why? Because I’d just be interested in how it turns out, how they put it all together, but not being a big fan of this type of movie, it would be a on time thing.

Beverly Hills Chihuahua

We went and watched Beverly Hills Chihuahua today after Cameron’s softball game.  I have to admit that overall I’ve not been impressed with the previews, but Cameron has been so off we went.  I was hopeful since it was Disney and the voices were several actors I knew and loved, but still doubtful.  Because my dad raises chihuahuas (and Cameron loves them), she was totally siked!  She actually wanted to try to sneak a puppy or two into the theater.

Overall, I was not overly impressed, and didn’t think this movie held the “Disney image” to me that I usually feel when watching a Disney movie; however, I was not the intended audience and Cameron loved the movie as much as she did the preview.  She watched it very closely – not once did it lose her attention, and she laughed and laughed.  I actually ended up just watching her for part of the movie as she was enjoying it so much.  She then retold the story on the way home (like I had not just watched it with her).

Personally, I give the movie a pretty poor rating, but if you have any children, you might want to take note that Cameron would for sure give it two thumbs up!
