Sailing Along the Life of Single Parenthood

Another Day, Another Day Off

Got a call a couple hours ago.  Apparently we now have electricity at the school and should be going back tomorrow right?  But nope…Now we are having some kind of water problems so we’ll have no school tomorrow either.  One more day of laziness.  I’m lovin it.  I could so get used to this.  Since I worked so hard to catch up the other day and it’s only the two of us laying around, we’re not making messes.  All I’ve had to do is a load of laundry and sink of dishes today.  Yep…I need to win the lottery and be a stay at home mom.

Another Day Off

Wow!!  It’s almost like a summer break again.  We are off school again today today.  Things are not so bad, but apparently at crunch time yesterday (the time when the superintendent needed to make a decision), there was still no electricity at the school so we were cancelled for today too.  I have to admit to enjoying it though I’ll be frustrated at how far off my lessons are when we do go back as I already had 6 weeks worth of lesson plans done.  *sigh*  It’s been nice though. We had Friday off (and the of course Saturday and Sunday) and then Monday and today, Tuesday.  That’s 5 days.  :) And now we’ll only go three days and be off two more.  :)  I could get used to this.  LOL  I haven’t gotten any notice one way or the other, but surely they will get our lights back on today and we’ll go back tomorrow.

Wow!! Wal-Mart Always Amazes Me!

Walmart seems to amaze me everytime I go in there.  It never fails.  Today was no exception.  Well as it turns out a piece of siding blew off the back of my house during Hurricane Ike so today my dad and I loaded up and headed out to town to pick up that and some other things.

We started at AutoZone – I have a headlight out.  Then decided to eat before we shopped so we fed ourselves some awesome food at Chili’s.  From there we split up. I headed in to Hobby Lobby to take the great advice of a reader here who told me about making a Cheetah chain to countdown to the Cheetah Girls One World Concert we’ll be heading to in just 26 shorts days in Bossier City.  My dad went in Tractor Supply (after I don’t know what).  Next up…Lowe’s.  This was the important stop.  The reason we had to go together so we could use his truck.  We looked at vinyl siding and priced that as I think I’d like to go to that in the long run and then purchased the one wood piece that we needed to repair my wall.  Now here’s the fun part.

I needed dog food, pool supplies, and wanted to pick up a Cheetah Girls cd for Cameron so we headed over to run in Walmart real quick.  Now I detest going in WalMart, but I didn’t know anywhere else I could pick up all of these things in one quick stop and we could head home so to Walmart we went.  As we pulled in, Dad noticed that there weren’t that many cars in the parking lot.  I said, “Oh, there’s probably just not as many people out right now with the storm just happening and all.”  We parked and got out.  I jumped out first and noticed that the doors were blocked off.  Then I looked to the other end and saw a large group of people at the door.  I pointed it out to Dad, but neither of us knew what was going on.  Dad had noticed a police car in the parking lot so I suggested that maybe something had happened and they’d asked everyone to exit while they took care of it.  But no….the explanation wasn’t that simple.  It was UNBELIEVABLE!!!

Walmart has decided I guess that all the evacuees are thiefs are something because they will only allow so many customers in at a time.  Then you wait in line and when one comes out, another can come in.  Which means there is now a LONG line waiting outside going in one family at a time!  Oh my God!!  I am still amazed hours later as I sit here and type this!  I honestly CAN’T BELIEVE THIS INSANITY!!!  What the he** does Wal-Mart think they have that is worth waiting in line just to get in the door? And what the he** is wrong with these goofy a$$ people waiting in line.  I’m here to tell you Wal-Mart doesn’t sell ANYTHING that I’m waiting in line just to get in the door (unless of course it’s the day after Thanksgiving).  I so loaded back up in the truck.  We went back to Lowe’s, and I bought my pool supplies.  Then we went to the feed store, and I bought dog food.  And as for the Cheetah Girls cd? Just ordered it online!!

SO THERE WAL-MART!!

I REFUSE to play these games for your crap!!!!

Thanks for listening to my rant. I do feel a little better.

Seems to Have Worked

Well it appears that my last post worked just fine so I’m guessing that Google Chrome and WordPress 2.6 are friends.  My friend that was reporting the problems was using an older version on a blog that she doesn’t have the rights to upgrade so I’m guessing there may be some issues with older versions of WordPress and Chrome, but mine is working fine so far. One of the other things I haven’t tested yet is my Sunshine Rewards offers to see if they will credit when using Chrome.  That’s on my list of things to still test out.

My initial review:

  • Fast, fast, fast.  I’m a Firefox user but it seems like pages are loading much faster in Chrome. The first thing I noticed was this actual blog.  There was no hesitation.
  • Mostly compatible. I’ve gone through several sites and so far I’ve been able to completely function.  So far I haven’t found anything I can’t do.
  • Userface is AWESOME!  I love the interface and look forward to becoming more adept at it.
  • It’ll let me login to my school email!!  This may not seem like a big deal, but FireFox won’t let me and I’ve had to open IE to open it in the past.
  • No pluins/extensions – I need Alexa and Stumble Upon Toolbars and such.  I’m missing those adds ons that I have with FireFox (Hopefully they will come soon).
  • Not auto spell checking, I don’t think.  Usually in Firefox, when I misspell a word as I type these posts, it gets a pretty red underline, but I’m not seeing it here, and there’s one word at least in this post, I’m pretty sure is misspelled, and I’d really like to right click and correct it!!

Overall so far, I’m really liking this browser.  I know many are worried about Google taking over the world or something, but I have never really worried about this.  When everyone was on Microsoft’s case, I thought that was ridiculos and I am keeping the same ideas here.  If Google (or any other company) can make products that are superior or make more people happy, they deserve the rewards.  That’s the whole system of free enterprise right?

On another note, I have Ike damage – stay tuned for pictures and a post about that as time allows.  My grandmother just called and we have electricity at our house. When we talked to her, she was experimenting with some plastic engraving machines she had read about somewhere and then purchased. (She tends to buy those odd things that no one has ever heard of).  So we are now packing up all of our stuff and heading home.  I’m not sure if I’ll have Internet at home but if I do, I’ll be back online tonight to report in about my house and tell you about my damage.  :(

Hunkering May Be Over

I’m almost afraid to say this. I don’t want to tempt fate, but I think our “hunkering down” is over.  Lights are still dimming here and there, but they’ve now been on for about 5 hours.  Life is great. I’ve caught up on several things. We ran the dishwasher and a load of clothes through  the wash, just in case.  Wind seems to have died down.  I really think we are going to be in cleanup mode soon.  I plan to get up in the morning and see about moving around town a little (if it looks safe).  I also want to head to my house so I can see how things are there.  Called and everything looks fine from the outside is the report of my grandmother, but I’m anxious to see it myself upclose.  During Rita everything looked fine from the outside, but when I went in, I had a huge lake in the living room where the roof had leaked.  :(

Still watching other Texas bloggers sites carefully for updates from them…check in everyone and let us know how things are going.
