Sailing Along the Life of Single Parenthood

Halloween!

Halloween is almost here, and Cameron’s costume arrived today.  She couldn’t decide and couldn’t decide what she wanted to be until last week!   Thank goodness Disney is great at order fulfillment. I ordered on Thursday, did not pay for expedited shipping, and it arrived today!  What’s she going to be? Belle!  We’ve now been Snow White, a Disney witch (it was a Disney princess costume, but in black and orange), Tinkerbell, Jasmine, Cinderella, and this year – Belle!  We’ve almost made it through all of the Princesses and then some.  :-)  Watch for pictures Wednesday for Wordless Wednesday!

Fall Carnival Plans

We held our first Junior class meeting today.  The topic – the Halloween Fall Carnival. The Juniors are responsible for pulling off this excellent community activity each year.  (And I’m lucky enough to be a Junior sponsor for the second year in a row).  Cameron came into my room after school and sees some of the handouts and such laying around from the meeting.  Now she’s ready to plan for the costume contest. Now, in my mind, there’s one simple answer  – the Cinderella costume we purchased for her birthday for Disney World.  This is a high dollar costume, it’s gorgeous, and she looks beautiful in it.  But she’s not so sure.  So today after we got home from school we did some online browsing (my favorite way to “window” shop plus we really have no Halloween costume stores in our area.)  for Halloween costumes.  We have to decide if she wants to be Cinderella.  Now I’m not saying I’ll for sure even let her have any other option, but I was curious as to what she’d choose if she did have that option.

Why am I not surprised when we hit Halloween Adventure, she immediately clicked on Disney costumes.  We already have Tinkerbell, Snow White, Cinderella, and Jasmine. But that’s where she headed.  I actually think being a pirate would be kind of cool for her (maybe next Halloween) so we looked at that too.  We found a ton of costumes online, but I’m still going to convince her that Cinderella is her first choice. :)

Disney & Toys R US ~ Exclusive Costume Designs

I think I’ve written enough about costumes for you to know we put a lot of thought into the costumes for Halloween, trips to Disney, and even Dress up at our house.  I just read about a new set of Disney costumes.

Disney and Toys R Us are joining together to create and sell an exclusive set of ten (10) costumes that will only be available through Toys R Us and Babies R us and part of the proceeds will go towards the Children Affected by AIDS Foundation (CAAF).

Unfortunately for me it looks like these costumes aren’t going to be large enough for Cameron, but for other Disney fan Moms out there, I wanted to pass this on.

Planning Ahead

One thing about our new school that I found really neat last year was that we do a Halloween…Fall Carnival, and there’s a Halloween Costume Contest. I’m trying to think ahead this year to come up with an idea for Cameron to make her stand out. We just bought her a Cinderella dress (shh! don’t tell it’s a birthday surprise), but I’m not sure I want her to be Cinderella for Halloween so I’ve be perusing the web to see what I can find. If something jumps out at me, we’ll do a new outfit. If not, we’ll stick to Cinderella.

I’ve mentioned some of my favorite costume vendors before, but another site that I like to look browse for costumes is InCostume.com. What I really like about InCostume is they have costumes for everyone and at a variety of prices. So if you are trying to budget for a costume, you can find one for a really good deal, they can hook you up, but if you want to go all out and spend some money, you’ll find something fun too. It will be quite warm here on Halloween still so that knocks out a lot of cute costumes.  Carnivals and trick or treating while you are drenched in sweat is just not fun.

I’ve pictured two of my favorites.  I actually think I still like our Cinderella dress better, but with all the poof and all that is involved in that dress, I’m wondering if it will be just too hot.

Costume Time

With our pending trip to Disney World I am so excited. Cameron really wants to be Cinderella while we are there so I have been browsing Halloween costumes for the last few hours. Costume Cauldron is one website that is INTERESTING!! They have some costumes I would NEVER be seen in that is for sure! Check out this one – it’s for sure not what pops in my mind when I think of Alice in Wonderland or an Angel:

Can you imagine?! I sure can imagine the looks I would get at our annual Halloween Carnival at our school! I am sure my students and administrators would look at me in such a different manner if I showed up in one of these trashy looks. WOW!!! They are definitely not my style! And look at this one. It is listed as a teen costume, and as the mother of a teenage girl, I’m here to tell you this one would not be happening!

The name of it is actually Teen Maid to Tease!! Can you say HE** No? I can not imagine. It is way too provocative. That is my first response to this outlandish costume. I can not think of any circumstance that I would let my teenage daughter out of my house in this costume. Looks to me like she’s headed somewhere besides trick or treating to me. Unbelievable that they would put this under a teen category. There must be some parents out there much more liberal than this Texas single mom. But it gets even worse – this one here, it is a child’s costume!!!

Yep, you read me right-a child’s costume!!! Child!! Now I will give them that Fallen Angel is in a size 14 – 16 so it is an older child, but still. Am I too conservative? I am beginning to wonder because when I see this, the words that pop into my head or not words I would ever want associated with my child!

On a positive note though, there were some very beautiful princess costumes I would love to buy for Cameron. Check these adorable costumes:

I’d love to see my little princess in this getup and with reasonable prices, only $6.99 shipping and 0% sales tax, I just may be picking up the blue one and calling it a Cinderella costume.
