Around Town
As I’ve mentioned in the previous posts….my town is a small one, but we do have some neat features that today we are going to explore. Most notably is the history of our town. It is the home of the first university, churches of all denominations, and the first American settlement in Texas. So as you drive around my town, you can take a stop and visit just a few of the over 50 recorded Texas Historical Landmark homes and sites. You can go to this website for some really interesting history behind our town.
If you can stand to stay around (or come back), we’ll have a super festival in honor of The Sassafrass October 24 and 25. Here we’ll have cookoffs, historical reenactments, coloring contests, and tons of other small town friendly fun events (we’ll be having the fall carnival at our school that weekend too)!
It’s Time To Eat
We’ve introduced ourselves and filled up with gas….now the fun really starts. Today’s topic – one of my favorites – FOOD!! Yep, no vacation will be complete without some high quality yummy food. Yep! Love it! I’m a food junkie. With gas prices where they are, we’ll be sticking fairly close to home. We’re going to one of my favorite Mexican Restaurants – La Carreta. There are multiple La Carretas around the country, but this one is not affiliated with any of the others. It’s located in Nacogdoches, Texas, and if you are ever there, you must stop by La Carreta. This is the best Mexican food in our area.
I recommend that you start with the queso flameado to go with your complimentary chips, salsa, tortillas, honey, and butter. One serving is more than enough to go around the table. Their sweet tea is very refreshing especially on these hot 100+ degree afternoons, but if you really want to try something that will bring you back to this restaurant again and again, order a frozen margarita – plain and strawberry are both top on my list. For your entree, I highly recommend that you either choose one of the shrimp meals or my favorite the chicken fajitas. These are my favorite chicken fajitas I’ve ever tasted. They have the best flavor and they serve them with this “garlicy” butter that is divine! Hmm…and if you can stand to eat anymore after filling up with all of this, ice cream is on the house.
Wow! After taking this trip with you guys, I’m thinking we’ll be making a family trip again this weekend….I can already taste my margarita and fajitas!
