If Mama Don’t Laugh, It Ain’t Funny

I was recently given the chance to read a very unique and entertaining book, If Mama Don’t Laugh, It Ain’t Funny.  This is a book collection of tales from a Southern Mom, Lucy Adams, about life as a mom, wife, and overall community member that will make you laugh so hard, you’ll have tears in your eyes. I’m not sure I’ve ever laughed so hard while reading a book.

Want to read more about my feelings about If Mama Don’t Laugh, It Ain’t Funny and enter for a  chance to win a hat from Lucy Adams?  Check out my Grand Opening post at A Novel Mind.

Our 2nd Book Tour: Queen of the Road (CONTESTS INCLUDED)

“A Charles Kuralt-Albert Brooks-style romp where they meet up with nudists, robbers and more. Required Reading.” -The New York Post

“Eat, Pray, Love – without the depression – meets Confessions of a Shopaholic – without the ditz.” – Denver Magazine.

You may remember we had a great book tour with Trockle back in October.  We started putting out decorations early that morning, but then the Gremlins arrived and almost ruined Cameron’s interview with Mama Trockle, but of course good prevaled and great prizes were given away.  Now it’s time to do it again – this time the book is Queen of the Road by Doreen Orion, and the prizes are going to be great for this book tour too so be sure to read all the way to the end for an overall prize and a prize that is ONLY for my readers!!!

Queen of the Road is the true story of Doreen and her husband, Tim, who are both psychiatrists, and embark on a year long road trip across the United States following Tim’s dreams and to Doreen’s despair. Tim has dreamed of this trip for years while Doreen has cringed at even the idea. However, somehow Tim convinces her to abandon her “princess” life of working from home in her pjs and load up in a 340 square foot bus turned RV for a year. On top of her hermit like qualities, Doreen also loves to shop – proud of the large number of shoes she owns, but these shoes can not make the trip with her. How will she ever survive?

I was immediately caught up in Doreen,Tim, the cats, and the poodle’s life. It was amazing how quickly I was dying to know what adventure would be next. Their journey’s were told with such great language that I felt like I was there. My only regret was that my book was a paperback because as I carried it around everywhere trying to get to the next story, it became pretty rugged. :)

I have to admit that when I began this book, I missed one very important detail – that it was true. Yes, as an avid reader, as an English teacher, I am mortified that I actually didn’t read (and register) that this was a true story.  After all, it was in perfectly clear English that is said ON THE COVER, “The True Tale of 47 States.”  Yes. So as I read of each of their stops along the way, I was increasingly amazed at how thorough Doreen has researched each of those locations. She knew so much about them. It was unbelievable.  Imagine my amazement at the end when I realized it was in fact true.  That explained so much.

My favorite stops along the way? I loved her trip to Disney World.  I actually read parts of this to my two daughters (they are 8 and 17) as we are the BIGGEST Disney fans and wishing hard that we could make it back to Disney.  My 17 year old is now dying to read the book herself, and my 8 year old told me I had to save it until she could read books “that big.”  Next I really enjoyed the Texas stops. Since I’m from Texas I have been to these areas also and so I could relate. It was actually during the Disney and Texas stops that I realized how much of this book was true – how much “research” Doreen had done to write this book.

When the end came and I realized it was true, well I am actually ready to read it again.  I don’t reread many books, but I do think this is one that I’ll focus on different parts the next time around and knowing it’s true, I think will put an entirely different outlook.

About The Author:

DOREEN ORION is a triple-boarded psychiatrist on the faculty of The University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. Her first book, I Know You Really Love Me, established her as a national expert on stalking with related appearances on Larry King Live, 48 Hours, and Good Morning America, to name a few. In spite of all this, Doreen considers her greatest accomplishment to be that her bus was featured as the centerfold for Bus Conversions magazine (where she is currently the travel writer), thus fulfilling her life-long ambition of becoming a Miss September.

In honor of Queen of the Road, we are actually doing our own little cross country trip – a trip across the Internet to discuss and share with you our opinions of this book. Please check out other stops on the Queen of the Road tour.

A New Page

I’ve added a new page to my blog.  It’s my virtual library! I’m an avid reader, and one day I’m going to blog about all these books I read, but as that’s been on my list and somehow I’m just not getting to it, I thought I would go ahead and at least do this.  If you are looking for something new to read, check out my library.  I’ll try to keep adding to it as I just added my “utmost favorites” tonight. I’ve started by dividing them by authors. These are my favorite authors. I’ve not included every book I own or even enjoyed by these authors – just those that I have enjoyed the most.  A lot of these books, I’ve read multiple times. I tried to go ahead and include a variety of genres as I tend to read almost anything I can get my hands on. What do you think of this addition?

Summer Reading Begins

I’m so excited that school is out for the summer. Not because I can sleep in (though that’s a definite plus) and not because with increasing gas prices, it will definitely be nice on the budget – the reason I’m excited is that summer time = reading time for me.  All year (school year that is) long I buy books. I even subscribe to a service that sends me one hardback book a month off of my wish list for the great price of $10. However, most of these books sit and gather dust until June!  I simply can’t find the time to do a lot of pleasurable reading during the school year (no matter how much I want it).  But come summer, I catch up on my reading. I’ve almost always got a book close by.  And this summer is no exception. The pile is high, but I’m looking forward to the challenge of making it to the bottom.

This summer my plans are a little different though. This summer I plan to approach my reading a little more “scholasticly.” (I wonder if that’s a word, lol)  This summer I will work my way through the pile of chick lit and mysteries, but I will do this with a twist. After reading one of my chosen books, I am going to read either a classic novel or a newer young adult novel.  While reading these, I will work on lesson plans and reading quizzes for those books so that I can find new ways to get my students to read during the upcoming school year. If there are any English teachers out there, looking for lesson plans, project ideas, or quizzes for novels, please come back from time to time.  I will post all of this as I have time. Looking for a specific book? Let me know, and if I have time, I’ll work on  your request.

My first book for the summer was a newer release that I have really been looking forward to reading. It’s a classic chic-lit book – Remember Me? by Sophie Kinsella. I absolutely have loved each of the Shopaholic books by Kinsella so when I saw this one available at the bookstore, I immediately came home and purchased it online.  It was at the top of the stack when I came home from school yesterday so I dug right in. I was immediately caught up in the lief of Lexi Smart (the main character in Remember Me?) and I couldn’t put the book down. I even took it with me to my parents today when I went to visit so that I could finish it. Yes – it was that good!!

Remember Me? is the story of Lexi Smart. Lexi is 28 years old (wow! so am I so maybe that’s why I was so interested so quickly) and wakes up in the hospital after what she thinks was a crazy night out with her girlfriends. As far as she knows, she’s in the hospital after falling down a set of stairs, but as it turns out, she’s wrong. It is in fact 4 years after that night, and she’s been in the hospital for a week after having a car accident. And a lot has happened in those four years – though Lexi doesn’t remember one drop about them. In the last four years, she’s had some major promotions at work, some friendship changes, her baby sister is no longer a baby, and maybe most importantly she’s gotten married. Yet, she has no memory of her new job, her new friends, her teenage sister, or her husband. This is the story of her attempt to get back to a “perfect” life she once lived. However, the more she gets to know of the new Lexi, the more she realizes that maybe she’s made some wrong decisions, and just maybe she doesn’t like this new Lexi Smart.

If you’ve watched Samantha Who? on ABC, this reminded me a lot of that series. I can see some definite parallels. If you’ve enjoyed this series, you’re sure to love Kinsella’s latest book.

Next on my list is Night by Elie Wiesel. It will take me a while to come back and post on it because I will be developing a unit on it for my English class for next year.

It’s Almost the Weekend!

I’m so excited – Friday is almost here – another week down. What really excited me as I’m starting a new book this weekend – Along Came a Spider (Alex Cross Novels) by James Patterson (yes, I’m a nerd). I am a bargain reader. I have a horrible habit of reading random books throughout a series because I buy them when I find them in a bargain bin. I’ve done that with the Alex Cross series by James Patterson and I did it with the Stephanie Plum series also.  I finally bought all the Stephanie Plum books and reread the entire series. Now I’m doing that with the Alex Cross books. I’ll try to remember to come back and post for you after I finish it about what thoughts I have.

I also have big plans for Saturday morning. I got an email from Ticketmaster yesterday and Raven is coming to a location near us this summer with her Pajama Party Concert.  I talked to Cameron and she’s excited. I’ll be logged in right before the tickets go on sale and trying to land us a pair of tickets. I’m really hoping I can get us a few after I wasn’t able to pick up even 2 Hannah Montana tickets. Now I just have to decide if I want to make it a just “Mommy & Cameron” trip or should I get one or two extras so she can bring a friend.
