Attention Travelers: AirTran Checked Bag Policy Change

I love AirTran prices and have used them to return home from Disney each time. I just stumbled upon this information and thought I’d share it with everyone else. (For me, it’s bad news):

Effective May 15, 2008 — The charge for a second checked bag will be $10.  For each fare-paying customer, AirTran Airways will allow one (1) checked piece free of charge, with size and weight limitations.

The excess baggage charge, for other than sporting equipment, will be $50.00 for each piece after the first 2 bags. Additional charges are applicable for bags exceeding the weight and size limits.

We almost always have more than one bag each so I hate to hear this. I’m glad our next trip is at least in August so that we will have shorts and tshirts instead of jeans and sweatshirts.

Some of you may be in luck as there are some exceptions to the rules according to a forum I frequent: The fee will not apply for passengers who hold Elite status in AirTran Airways’ A+ Rewards frequent flier program, or ticketed passengers traveling in Business Class.

Can you believe this? First they charge you if you over 50 lbs and now they charge you if you have a second bag. So essentially with the weight of luggage if you pack over a pair of underwear and a toothbrush you are in trouble.

I know. I’m starting to feel the same way. I dealt with the weight limit ok because we could spread stuff out between bags, but now with only 3 bags it’s going to be tough!! I’ll probably end up paying the extra $10 for one or two of us to have 2 bags.

Run to walmart and get some duffel bags to carry on. You can get some 28 inch bags for just $9 and they fold/zip up flat for on the way and then on the way home you can put all your dirty clothes in them (crumpled up) and carry them on with you while your nice stuff is in the suit case. You are still allowed 2 carry on items so start using them.

:) We already do that and use our carry on items. I’m just going to have to learn to pack lighter. lol And I’m really thinking of shipping stuff that we don’t bring home anyways (like snacks, soaps, shampoos, etc).
