Angelina Jolie Criticises Disney
With all the headlines I’m reading, it appears that Angelina Jolie has made it her mission to make sure the entire world is aware that Disney has not yet produced a movie with an African princess. While I do think she makes a valid point, and I think it is something that Disney needs to correct, I think this is a prime example of someone in power using their popularity to make a bigger deal of things than they really are.
First off, if you or I made this comment, it would not even make our local newspapers more and likely, but because of who Angelina is this is making headline after headline.
Second, when those who are popular/powerful do take a stand and try to get changes, it would be great if it was for society, but no - that’s not Angelina’s concerns. Her only concerns are her girls. She was quoted in The Herald Sun as saying, “There still isn’t a Disney princess that’s African and it’s very difficult because our daughters’ getting into princesses right now and it upsets me.”
Third, Angelina is speaking and making headlines without doing any research. It was published a couple months ago that Disney is in fact in the process of creating an African American princess in a movie titled “The Frog Princess.” The movie is set to be released in 2009. And what really irks me about this is those that don’t follow Disney news closely will probably give Angelina Jolie credit for “forcing Disney to look at the issue.”

Great point. I mean, Disney has an Indian Princess and a Chinese heroine—and their next project’s heroine is an African Princess. Should’ve looked it up in Imdb.
You’re right, she should have researched about their upcoming projects and shouldn’t worry because if she gets to watch musical plays, she’ll be surprised how the cast belongs to different races. And this is really great!
I love that she’s very concerned to her daughter, but before saying a comment about something, sometimes it’s best to know the right words to say.
Yes. It’s not that I don’t agree with Angelina (and obviously Disney does too). It’s just that she doesn’t do any research, and I think before celebrities “Take a stand,” they should at least know what they are talking about.
I agree with your assessment. While it has taken a while for Disney to do this they are doing it and it would have been nice for her to say something along those lines.
